Wild L.A. Field Trip to Cabrillo Beach

Join Museum professionals for a peek at the tidepools and animals that inhabit our intertidal zone. We will learn from Museum scientists about the small, salty critters that can be found in the tidepools and diverse habitats around us at Cabrillo Beach.

We are excited to welcome Community Partners from Breathe SoCal and Extraordinary Families for this field trip! This program is exclusively for your communities. 

What is provided

  • Field guide 
  • Light snacks (please bring extra snacks if you have any dietary restrictions. 
  • Nature kit (i.e., macro lens, magnifying lens, petri dish)
  • Museum experts! Our Museum staff will help guide you through safety, how to tidepool, and identification of tidepool animals we may encounter. 

What you should bring: 

  • Sun protection (i.e., sunscreen, hat, sunglasses)
  • Water bottle
  • Lunch or snacks
  • We recommend dressing in layers as weather conditions may change throughout the day. 

Transportation:

Meeting at the Museum - ARRIVE BY 8:45 AM

Those of you who have opted in for FREE parking and transportation to San Pedro, please meet at the Museum between 8:30 AM - 8:45 AM.  The Museum is located at 900 Exposition Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90007.  The Car Park is 1/2 south of Exposition Blvd of Bill Robertson Lane, opposite Jesse Brewer Park.  Give your name to the parking attendant to enter the Car Park. 

A Museum staff member will meet you and walk you to the South Entrance of the Museum to meet the bus. The bus will depart promptly at 9 AM. 

Meet at Cabrillo Beach - ARRIVE BY 10 AM 

If you have opted to meet us at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, please arrive by 10:00 - 10:15 AM. The parking area is located at 3721 Shoshonean Rd, San Pedro, CA 90731. The rate to park your vehicle is $2 per hour ($15 max per day) and is generally cash only.  There may be some street parking nearby. 

Program Schedule: 

10:30 AM - Welcome, introductions and tidepool safety

10:45 AM - Tidepooling!

12:30 PM - Reflections and sharing

1:00 PM - Program concludes; bus departs for NHM
